How to add the Text website widget to WordPress

The WordPress plugin makes it easy to add a chat widget to your website without manually adding widget code. You can add live chat to your WordPress site and connect it to Text to use AI agents, workflows, visitor tracking, and more.

If your site runs on WooCommerce, the plugin automatically brings ecommerce insights into chat.

Installation options

You can install and connect the plugin in three ways:

Before you start, make sure you have the following:

  • WordPress version: 6.0 or higher

  • PHP version: 7.4 or higher

  • Text account (can be created during setup)

From the WordPress Plugin Marketplace

Install the plugin directly from your WordPress Admin Panel.

From Text

Start in Text by creating a widget, then follow the guided steps to install the plugin in WordPress.

Manual installation (.zip file)

Upload and install the plugin .zip file from the WordPress Plugin Directory manually if installation from the marketplace is not available.

Install from the WordPress Plugin Marketplace

Start in your WordPress Admin Panel.

Step 1: Install and activate the plugin in WordPress

In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Plugins → Add Plugin, search for the AI Chatbot by Text plugin, then click Install Now and Activate.

Step 2: Connect the plugin to Text

Open the Text tab in your WordPress sidebar, click Connect Text, and log in or sign up for a Text account.

Step 3: Complete the setup

Complete the setup in Text to finish connecting your website.

You can check the widget status and manage all website widgets in Settings → Website widgets

If the status does not change to Connected, visit your site and interact with the widget to trigger activity. The status should then update to Connected.

Install from Text

Start from your Text account. 

Step 1: Open your widget settings

Go to your Text dashboard, then head to Settings → Website widgets

Step 2: Enter your website URL

Enter the URL of the website where you want to add the widget, then select Continue.

Step 3: Select how to connect the widget to your website

You’ll be prompted to use the WordPress installation method. To continue, go to your WordPress admin dashboard and follow the installation steps.

Clicking “Add to WordPress” will take you to the plugin page in the WordPress Plugin Directory.

Step 4: Install and activate the plugin in WordPress

In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Plugins → Add Plugin, search for the AI Chatbot by Text plugin, then click Install Now and Activate.

Step 5: Connect the plugin to Text

In WordPress, open the Text tab from the sidebar, then click Connect Text.

Step 6: Complete the setup and check widget status

Log in to your existing Text account to connect Text to WordPress. Your widget should then be active.

You can check its status in Settings → Website widgets.

If the status does not update, visit your site and interact with the widget. This should trigger activity and change the status to Connected.

Install manually using a .zip file

Use this method if you cannot install the plugin from the marketplace.

Step 1: Download the plugin .zip file

Go to the WordPress Plugin Directory, search for AI Chatbot by Text, and Download the .zip file.

Step 2: Upload the plugin

Navigate to Plugins → Add Plugin and select Upload Plugin. Choose the .zip file from your downloaded files.

Step 3: Install and activate the plugin

Click Install Now, then select Activate Plugin.

Step 4: Connect the plugin to Text

Open the Text tab from the sidebar, then click Connect Text to complete the installation.

WooCommerce compatibility

If your WordPress site uses WooCommerce, the plugin automatically adds ecommerce insights to chat so your team can deliver faster, more personalized support during live conversations.

For example, agents can see what a customer has in their cart and view product details in real time, making it easier to answer questions, reduce friction, and help close more sales.

These may include:

  • Customer cart contents

  • Product details

If WooCommerce is not installed, the website widget will still function normally, but ecommerce data will not be available.

Frequently asked questions

  • Install the AI Chatbot by Text plugin from your WordPress Admin Panel, activate it, then connect it to your Text account from the Text tab in your WordPress sidebar. The chat widget will appear on your site automatically.

  • Yes. If WooCommerce is installed, the plugin automatically enables ecommerce features, such as viewing customer cart contents and product details during live chat sessions. No additional setup is required.

  • The plugin itself is free to install from the WordPress Admin Panel. You need a Text account to use it, but you can create one during the setup process.

  • Clear any caching plugins on your site, confirm the plugin is activated under Plugins > Installed Plugins, and make sure the widget is connected in your Text dashboard under Settings > Website widgets.

Go to Settings → Website widgets in Text to start the installation process, or connect the website widget from the WordPress Plugin Directory.

Once connected, your WordPress site will be fully integrated with Text and ready to handle real-time conversations.
